ROLLING AHEAD
Bearings make an important component of a machine that enable a smooth movement of the machine parts. Most bearings facilitate the desired motion by minimising friction. Bearings are classified broadly according to the type of operation, the motions allowed, or to the directions of the loads (forces) applied to the parts. Bearings find applications in hydraulic cylinders, axles, gearboxes, articulation joints, suspension systems, booms, linkages and steering systems that require movement. Automotive bearings and industrial bearings constitute the two major application segments of bearings. In the industrial bearings, the construction and mining equipment bearings constitute below 10 per cent. However, market growth and innovative design developments are visible in this sector due to the complex application parameters. Lubrication-free bearings (maintenance-free bearings) is relatively a new concept emerged for use where lubrication is not optimal or when re-greasing is difficult due to accessibility.

Construction and mining equipment work in harsh and challenging conditions performing heavy-duty jobs, compared with the passenger vehicles. The bearings for such applications require some degree of ruggedness to handle the challenges of dust, mud, and huge loads. There has been a host of new innovations taking place in the construction and mining equipment to improve their efficiency and productivity. To meet the changing requirements from construction and mining OEMs, innovative design improvements are taking place in bearings also. To effectively manage and meet the technology parameters and changing quality requirements, it is ideal that the construction equipment OEMs work directly with bearing manufacturers to choose the right bearing solution.

With the construction equipment market is anticipated to grow in double-digits in the coming years, bearing manufacturers are also expecting a growth in the same line that of the construction equipment, in the coming years. All these, combined with the government's forward looking policies such as 'Make in India', the bearings market is sure to have a positive outlook.
